The split is the ground, not the brand
These two brands came from different jobs and still serve them. Thorogood built its reputation on a flat welted wedge for carpenters and floor trades — a boot that spreads load across a smooth surface and can be taken apart and rebuilt. Ariat came out of the western and ranch market, where the ground is uneven, wet and full of things that roll an ankle, and the design answer there was a wide stable platform and a sealed upper.
So the honest version of this comparison is not “which brand is better” but “what are you standing on.” On a dry concrete slab the Thorogood wins on every axis that matters. On wet broken ground the Thorogood is the wrong boot at any price, because it is unlined and takes water straight through.
The case for Thorogood
The welt. Goodyear storm welted, which means resoleable — repeatedly, by any competent cobbler. Ariat publishes no welt on either boot here. Over five years that difference is the entire argument, and resoling work boots has the numbers.
A flat wedge on a flat floor. The MAXWear Wedge has no heel breast and puts the whole footprint on the ground. On concrete that is measurably less fatiguing than a heeled lug sole, which is why best work boots for concrete is built around this platform.
Unlined, and that is a feature. No membrane means it breathes, molds further to the foot, and is far more wearable in summer heat than a sealed boot. It also means it gets wet.
Width across the whole size run. D and EE from 7 to 14. Ariat lists a wide on the Groundbreaker but publishes no width range on the WorkHog XT.
A specific origin claim. “Made in USA with USA and globally sourced components” is a narrower, more checkable statement than anything on Ariat's pages, which publish no origin at all for these models.
The case for Ariat
DRYShield, on both boots. Waterproof and breathable on the WorkHog XT, and Ariat's PRO waterproof construction on the Groundbreaker. The Thorogood 804-4200 has no answer to this, and no amount of wax closes the gap on an unlined boot — waterproof vs water-resistant explains why.
The ATS Max platform. An extra-wide midfoot over a dual-density EVA midsole. On rutted ground, gravel and pasture, a wide base is the difference between a rolled ankle and a stumble. A flat wedge has no equivalent.
A carbon toe. The WorkHog XT uses a non-metallic carbon cap — lighter than steel, and it does not pull cold into the toes. The Thorogood 804-4200 is steel only. Carbon fiber toe vs composite toe covers what that cap is and is not good at.
A real pull-on option. The Groundbreaker wellington is waterproof, EH-rated and stocked in a wide. If you are in and out of boots all day, laces are a tax — pull-on vs lace-up is the full trade-off.
Buy the Thorogood if…
- You stand on flat, dry concrete or subfloor most of the day.
- You want a boot you can resole and keep for years.
- You work in heat and want an unlined upper.
- You need a D or EE in an unusual size.
Buy the Ariat if…
- Your ground is wet, muddy or uneven.
- You want a non-metallic carbon toe rather than steel.
- You roll ankles and want the widest midfoot available.
- You want a waterproof pull-on rather than a lace-up.
Where both lose
Neither is a climbing boot. Thorogood's wedge has no heel breast and Ariat's EVA platform is built to absorb, not to brace — if you are on rungs or poles daily, see work boots for linemen. Neither brand publishes a weight on these models either, so if you are trying to cut grams you are comparing on nothing. Ariat also publishes no origin and no construction method, which makes its boots harder to judge on paper than Thorogood's.

Thorogood American Heritage 6" Moc Toe Safety Toe MAXWear Wedge (804-4200)

Specifications read from Thorogood product page (804-4200) on 2026-09-27. We have not worn this boot.
What works
- Goodyear storm welt is a resoleable construction, not a disposable one
- Flat wedge spreads load evenly on concrete instead of concentrating it under a heel
- Unlined upper breaks in to the foot rather than around a liner
- EE width is stocked across the whole size run, not just the middle
What doesn't
- Not waterproof and not insulated — the unlined upper soaks
- A flat wedge gives up bite on mud, gravel and ladder rungs
- Manufacturer publishes no weight figure, so weight comparisons are guesswork
Who this is wrong for
Anyone working outdoors on soft or uneven ground, or in standing water. The wedge has no lugs to bite and the unlined upper is not waterproof.
Sizing
Thorogood's moc-toe last is widely reported to run large; owner reviews consistently suggest going a half size down from a measured Brannock length. D and EE are both stocked, so take the width rather than sizing up for room.

Ariat WorkHog XT Waterproof Carbon Toe Work Boot
Ariat builds the WorkHog XT around lateral stability and a wide midfoot platform — the pull-on answer for outdoor work on ground that never sits level.
Published specifications
- Toe
- Carbon safety toe, non-metallic
- Safety rating
- ASTM F2413 I/C EH SRO on the WorkHog XT Incognito carbon toe, per Ariat's published specification
- Upper
- Leather upper with DRYShield waterproof breathable construction

- Midsole / shank
- ATS Max platform with an extra-wide midfoot and a dual-density EVA midsole
- Construction
- Not published as a welt construction
- Waterproof
- Waterproof — DRYShield
- Insulation
- Not insulated
Specifications read from Ariat product page (WorkHog XT waterproof carbon toe) on 2026-09-27. We have not worn this boot.
What works
- Lateral stability is the design brief, and it shows on uneven ground
- Carries an SRO slip designation as well as EH on the rated models
- Pull-on entry with a lacing-free instep
What doesn't
- Ariat publishes the full designation on some WorkHog XT models and not others — check the exact variant
- Wide midfoot platform feels clumsy indoors
- Not resoleable
Who this is wrong for
Tight indoor work in confined spaces. The wide platform that helps on rubble is a hindrance in a crawl space.
Sizing
Ariat runs a touch long for many owners; a half size down is a common report. Because it is a pull-on, size for the instep first.

- Insulation
- Not insulated
- Widths
- A wide (EE) version is listed
Specifications read from Authorized retailer spec page (Academy) — Ariat Groundbreaker Wide H2O EH steel toe wellington on 2026-09-27. We have not worn this boot.
What works
- Cheapest waterproof EH pull-on here
- Wide version genuinely stocked
- No laces to deal with in mud
What doesn't
- Entry-tier materials — expect a shorter life than the WorkHog XT
- Steel toe conducts cold
- Retailer page publishes less detail than Ariat's own pages
Who this is wrong for
Anyone in real cold. A steel cap with no insulation is the worst toe-temperature combination available.
Sizing
Groundbreaker pull-ons need room at the instep to get on. If your foot is high-volume, take the EE before you take a longer size.
Frequently asked questions
Is Thorogood or Ariat better for work boots?
It depends on the ground. Thorogood's American Heritage 804-4200 is Goodyear storm welted, USA-built and resoleable, which makes it the better long-term buy for flat, dry floors. Ariat's WorkHog XT is DRYShield waterproof on an extra-wide ATS Max midfoot with a carbon toe, which makes it the better buy for wet, uneven ground. Ariat publishes no welt, so it is not a rebuild boot.
Are Ariat work boots resoleable?
Not the models here. Ariat does not publish a welt construction on either the WorkHog XT carbon toe or the Groundbreaker wellington, so both should be treated as replace-not-repair boots. Construction, not price, decides this — check the construction line on the specific model.
Is the Ariat WorkHog XT good for concrete?
It is not what the platform was designed for. The ATS Max midfoot and dual-density EVA are built for stability on uneven ground; on a flat slab a full-contact wedge like Thorogood's MAXWear puts more footprint on the floor and is less fatiguing. If your floor is concrete, start with a wedge.
Does Thorogood make a waterproof boot?
Yes, but not the 804-4200. Thorogood's 1957 Series waterproof 6-inch steel toe moc toe is Goodyear welted and waterproof, which gets you the welt and the sealed upper in one boot. The American Heritage 804-4200 compared here is unlined and not waterproof by design.
