Who a side zip is actually for
Three groups, and if you are not in one of them a side zip is a moving part you do not need. First, anyone in and out of boots repeatedly during a shift — service calls into houses, EMS, anyone who removes boots at a customer's door. Second, anyone wearing an 8-inch or taller boot, where full lacing is a two-minute job. Third, anyone whose hands make lacing slow or painful, which is a real and under-discussed reason this category sells.
The category overlaps heavily with tactical and duty footwear, which is why the specifications look different from a trade boot: bloodborne pathogen resistance, polishable toes and EMS certifications turn up because those buyers need them.
How to lace a side-zip boot so the zip survives
This is the whole maintenance story and almost nobody is told it. Lace the boot to a proper fit with the zip open, then close the zip. If the zip has to stretch the boot closed, every pull is loading the teeth laterally and the zipper becomes the part that fails.
Done properly, the laces carry the tension and the zip only opens and closes a boot that is already the right size. That is why a semi-locking zip — Danner's term for the 23826's closure — is worth having: it stops the pull creeping down under flex, which is the other way zips die.
The honest downside
- A zipper is a moving part in a dirty environment. Grit in the teeth is what ends most of them. A Velcro flap over the zip — the GEN-flex2 has one — measurably helps.
- A zip is a seam in a waterproof boot. The membrane sits behind it, but it is one more place for water to work at.
- Most side-zip boots are cemented. Of these three, only the GEN-flex2 is welted, and that one has no safety toe.
- The zip cannot be repaired locally on most models. A cobbler can replace a zipper in a fashion boot; replacing one in a membrane-lined work boot is usually uneconomic.

Side-zip boots come from the duty and tactical market, where a safety toe is often not required, so a large share of them are soft-toe boots that look exactly like work boots. The GEN-flex2 in this list is one: Thorogood states a non-safety toe and publishes no ASTM designation for it at all.
If your site requires protective footwear under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.136, read the toe specification before the zip specification. The Deuce carries an ASTM F2413-18 composite cap with EH; the Danner carries an ANSI/ASTM I75 and C75 composite cap. Those are the two you can wear on a site.
What to look for
- A full lace row as well as the zip. A zip-only boot has no way to tune fit.
- A covered or semi-locking zip, not a bare exposed one.
- An ASTM F2413 toe designation, if your site needs one.
- Real widths. The Danner's B through EE is the best here; the Deuce offers M, W and XW.
- A removable footbed, because these are cemented boots and the footbed is the only serviceable part.

Are side zip work boots worth it?
If you wear an 8-inch boot and take it off during the day, yes — you lace it once and the zip does the rest. If you put boots on in the morning and take them off at night, you are adding a moving part to a dirty environment for very little benefit.
Do side zippers on work boots break?
They are the most likely part of the boot to fail, and usually for one avoidable reason: the boot is laced too loose, so the zip is doing the tightening and the teeth are loaded sideways every time. Lace to fit with the zip open, keep the teeth clean, and look for a covered or semi-locking zip.
Are side zip boots waterproof?
The ones with a membrane are, because the waterproof layer sits behind the zip rather than being the zip. The zip does add another seam and another wear point, so in constant standing water a plain lace-up or a pull-on is the more durable choice.
Do side zip work boots have steel toes?
Some do, many do not — this category comes out of the tactical and duty market where a safety toe is often optional. Composite caps are more common than steel because the same boots are frequently specified as non-metallic. Check for an ASTM F2413 designation before assuming.
