About Steel & Sole

What this site is

Steel & Sole is an independent work boot research site. It covers safety toe types and the standards behind them, soles and construction, waterproofing and traction, sizing, break-in and care — currently across 54 guides and 44 researched products.

It exists because the work boot category is badly served. Most “best boots” lists are the same dozen boots reshuffled, with specifications copied from retailer pages, safety standards summarized wrongly, and confident claims about durability from people who have not owned any of them either.

Who writes it

Ryder M. — Founder and editor. Ryder M. is the hands-on owner behind Magoo Media Group and the editor of Steel & Sole. He reads the spec sheets, the safety standards and the owner reviews so you do not have to.

Every article, guide and comparison on this site carries that byline. There is no editorial panel, no rotating cast of freelancers, and no anonymous content. If a page is wrong, one person is responsible for it.

What we do not claim

This is the part most sites leave out, so it goes near the top here.

• We have never worn any boot on this site. No page says “in our testing”, “we wore these for three months”, or “after a season on site”. We do not have a test lab, we do not have a wear-test program, and inventing one would be the easiest thing in the world to fake and the hardest thing to trust.
• We hold no trade credentials. No licensed electrician, no certified safety professional, no podiatrist. Where a question needs that expertise — foot health, site compliance — the page says so and points you at someone qualified.
• We do not rate boots numerically. A score implies a measurement, and we have not measured anything. You will not find a number out of ten anywhere on this site, and no product schema on this site carries a rating.
• We do not publish prices. We have no live price feed, so every buy button says “Check price on Amazon” rather than a number that might be months stale.

What we do instead

Three things, and they are enough to be genuinely useful.

We read the actual specification. Every product card names the manufacturer page the specs came from and the date we read it. Where a maker does not publish a figure, the card says “not published” rather than filling the gap.

We read the actual standards. ASTM F2413, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.136, ASTM F3445 — cited by designation and number, with the specific test conditions where they matter. The EH rating is tested at 18,000 volts for one minute in dry conditions, and that qualifier changes what the rating means.

We say when the evidence does not settle it. Plenty of boot questions do not have a clean answer, and a page that admits that is more useful than one that invents a verdict.
