The case for Red Wing
Room. Red Wing publishes 44% more toe room than a standard work boot on the King Toe, and stocks four widths including an H that almost nobody else offers. If your feet have been the problem with every boot you have owned, this is the clearest answer on the market.
Non-metallic underfoot. A non-metallic toe and a non-metallic shank together, which matters if you pass through a detector — a composite cap over a steel shank does not.
Honesty about what it is not. Stating on your own product page that a $254.99 boot cannot be resoled is unusual, and it is the kind of disclosure that makes the rest of the spec sheet more credible.
Waterproof. The Thorogood 804-4200 is not, and no treatment closes that gap.
The case for Thorogood
It can be resoled. The Goodyear storm welt is the whole argument. Over five years, a welted boot resoled twice costs about what a cemented boot replaced three times costs — and it is one boot, molded to your foot, the entire time.
Width across the whole size run. Two widths sounds worse than four until you notice Thorogood stocks D and EE from size 7 to 14. Plenty of brands offer a wide only in the middle sizes.
Unlined. A real feature, not a saving. It breaks in faster, molds further, and is far more comfortable in summer than any membrane boot.
US manufacture. Stated as “Made in USA with USA and globally sourced components”, which is a more specific claim than Red Wing's “globally sourced”.
Buy the Red Wing if…
- Your feet are wide, or you have never found a boot with enough room.
- You need a fully non-metallic boot for a detector.
- You work in the wet and need waterproofing.
- You are content to replace boots rather than rebuild them.
Buy the Thorogood if…
- You want a boot you can resole and keep for years.
- You stand on concrete and want a flat wedge.
- You work in heat and want an unlined upper.
- US manufacture matters to you.
Where both lose
Neither is a climbing boot. The Thorogood wedge has no heel breast at all and the King Toe is not built for rung work — if you are on ladders or poles daily, look at a purpose-built climbing boot instead.
Neither is especially light. If weight is your priority, both are the wrong shortlist — see lightweight work boots.
And neither publishes a met-guard version in the models compared here. Red Wing does offer a King Toe Metguard (#4456) separately if instep protection is a requirement.

Anyone buying for longevity through resoling. Red Wing's own page says no on this model — look at their welted Heritage lines instead.
Sizing
The King Toe last adds room at the toes, not at the heel. If you have a narrow heel, take the B width before you size down; sizing down to fix heel slip will crowd the toes the boot was built to free.

Thorogood's moc-toe last is widely reported to run large; owner reviews consistently suggest going a half size down from a measured Brannock length. D and EE are both stocked, so take the width rather than sizing up for room.

Hot-weather outdoor work. A membrane traps heat, and an unlined Thorogood on the same last will be far more comfortable in summer.
Sizing
Same moc-toe last family as the American Heritage line. Try your normal size with a thick work sock first; the waterproof lining takes up a little more volume than the unlined models.
